Division facts, built on the times tables

Division is multiplication in reverse. Pet Rocket practises both, so that 42 ÷ 7 = 6 becomes as automatic as 6 × 7 = 42.

Why division facts feel harder

Many children can say 6 × 7 = 42 without thinking, but hesitate at 42 ÷ 7. Division facts usually get less practice, and the question is asked backwards. The fix is to learn them together with the times tables.

One fact family, four facts

6 × 7 = 42, 7 × 6 = 42, 42 ÷ 6 = 7 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6 all use the same three numbers. When a child sees 42 ÷ 7, they can ask: what times 7 makes 42? That turns a division question into a times tables fact they already know.

How it works in Pet Rocket

On the start screen your child chooses times tables and division together, only times tables or only division. A game has two one-minute rounds; with both chosen, the first round is times tables and the second is division, so the game practises both directions.

With the Times Tables Coach in the Moon Pass, division facts that go wrong come back soon after, until they stick. Teachers can also share a link that opens the game with the right tables selected.

Frequently asked questions

What are division facts?

Division facts are the division questions that go with the times tables, such as 56 ÷ 8 = 7. They use whole numbers, have no remainder and children learn to recall them quickly.

When do children learn division facts?

Alongside the times tables. In the national curriculum in England, Year 2 pupils recall the multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, and by Year 4 those for all tables up to 12 × 12.

How can I practise division at home?

Ask the times tables question first: what times 8 makes 56? Then practise for a few minutes a day. In Pet Rocket, simply pick only division, or times tables and division together.

Pet Rocket is an independent practice game. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Department for Education or the Standards and Testing Agency, and every school sets its own pace.
