Pet Rocket

Times tables test: how secure are your child’s tables?

A times tables test is coming up, and you are not sure which tables are secure. In Pet Rocket every round is a short one-minute test that your child is happy to play for their own pet. With the Moon Pass you then see which facts still go wrong.

Chanting is not the same as a test

At home your child can chant the 7 times table without a pause, from 1 × 7 to 10 × 7. In a test the questions come one at a time and out of order, often against the clock. That is when you find out which facts are really secure.

Every round is a small test

A game has two rounds of one minute, with multiplication, division or both. There is one question on the screen at a time and nothing else to distract. After each round your child sees how many they got right and their accuracy. There are no marks out of ten: it stays a game.

If your child is in Year 4 and preparing for the multiplication tables check, the page on the check explains how it works.

Test the tables that will come up

Choose all the tables, only the 6s to 9s, or your own set, for example just the 7 times table and the 8 times table. Every table has its own page with all the facts and a trick.

Does your child want to take on a friend? Send a challenge: whoever opens the link gets exactly the same questions.

From the test to focused practice

With the Moon Pass you see the accuracy for each table and your child’s hardest facts. The Times Tables Coach brings those facts back more often, so the last few days before the test go to the right questions. You can also print a worksheet of your child’s hard facts, with an answer sheet.

Frequently asked questions

How much time does a child get in a times tables test?

That depends on the school and the teacher. The aim is often to know a fact within a few seconds, without counting. Ask the teacher how the test works in class.

How often should my child practise before the test?

A two-minute game every day works better than one long session the night before. Start a few days ahead.

Does my child get a mark?

No. Your child sees how many answers were right and their accuracy. When a table is secure, they earn a planet for it in their trophy cabinet.
