Dividing by 3
Is your child unsure about 24 ÷ 3 or 27 ÷ 3? Dividing by 3 has no fixed last digit. With the digit trick you can see straight away whether a number divides by 3.
Dividing by 3
- 3 ÷ 3 = 1
- 6 ÷ 3 = 2
- 9 ÷ 3 = 3
- 12 ÷ 3 = 4
- 15 ÷ 3 = 5
- 18 ÷ 3 = 6
- 21 ÷ 3 = 7
- 24 ÷ 3 = 8
- 27 ÷ 3 = 9
- 30 ÷ 3 = 10
- 33 ÷ 3 = 11
- 36 ÷ 3 = 12
Trick
Add up the digits. If you get 3, 6 or 9, it divides by 3: for 27, 2 + 7 = 9. Then find the times sum that makes 27: 3 × 9.
Watch out
21 ÷ 3 = 7 and 24 ÷ 3 = 8 often get mixed up.
