Dividing by 5
Does your child still work out 35 ÷ 5 step by step? A quick trick goes via the 10 times table.
Dividing by 5
- 5 ÷ 5 = 1
- 10 ÷ 5 = 2
- 15 ÷ 5 = 3
- 20 ÷ 5 = 4
- 25 ÷ 5 = 5
- 30 ÷ 5 = 6
- 35 ÷ 5 = 7
- 40 ÷ 5 = 8
- 45 ÷ 5 = 9
- 50 ÷ 5 = 10
- 55 ÷ 5 = 11
- 60 ÷ 5 = 12
Trick
Double it and drop the 0. 35 ÷ 5: double 35 is 70, without the 0 that is 7. Only numbers ending in 0 or 5 divide neatly by 5.
Watch out
For 40 ÷ 5, doubling gives 80, so 8. Only drop the 0 after doubling.
