Dividing by 8
Is 56 ÷ 8 a stumbling block? Dividing by 8 is halving three times, and the 5-6-7-8 trick does the rest.
Dividing by 8
- 8 ÷ 8 = 1
- 16 ÷ 8 = 2
- 24 ÷ 8 = 3
- 32 ÷ 8 = 4
- 40 ÷ 8 = 5
- 48 ÷ 8 = 6
- 56 ÷ 8 = 7
- 64 ÷ 8 = 8
- 72 ÷ 8 = 9
- 80 ÷ 8 = 10
- 88 ÷ 8 = 11
- 96 ÷ 8 = 12
Trick
Halve three times: 56 → 28 → 14 → 7. Or remember 5, 6, 7, 8: 56 ÷ 8 = 7.
Watch out
After halving twice you have divided by 4. Count along: one, two, three times.
