Dividing by 9
Dividing by 9 looks hard, but there is a handy pattern in it. With one trick your child can almost read off the answer.
Dividing by 9
- 9 ÷ 9 = 1
- 18 ÷ 9 = 2
- 27 ÷ 9 = 3
- 36 ÷ 9 = 4
- 45 ÷ 9 = 5
- 54 ÷ 9 = 6
- 63 ÷ 9 = 7
- 72 ÷ 9 = 8
- 81 ÷ 9 = 9
- 90 ÷ 9 = 10
- 99 ÷ 9 = 11
- 108 ÷ 9 = 12
Trick
Take the first digit and add 1. 63 ÷ 9: 6 + 1 = 7. That works for every sum from 18 ÷ 9 to 90 ÷ 9.
Watch out
Does the number divide by 9 at all? Add up the digits: that must make 9 (for 63, 6 + 3 = 9).
