Dividing by 7
For many children dividing by 7 is the hardest, because there is no halving or zero trick. The best help is turning the 7 times table around.
Dividing by 7
- 7 ÷ 7 = 1
- 14 ÷ 7 = 2
- 21 ÷ 7 = 3
- 28 ÷ 7 = 4
- 35 ÷ 7 = 5
- 42 ÷ 7 = 6
- 49 ÷ 7 = 7
- 56 ÷ 7 = 8
- 63 ÷ 7 = 9
- 70 ÷ 7 = 10
- 77 ÷ 7 = 11
- 84 ÷ 7 = 12
Trick
Ask: what number times 7 makes this? 42 ÷ 7: 6 × 7 = 42, so 6. Practise 42, 49 and 56 most, the three hardest.
Watch out
42 ÷ 7 = 6 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8 often get swapped. Check with the times sum.
